Housed in the former Higgins and Sons Brewery, Bedford Museum is situated within the picturesque gardens of Bedford Castle mound, beside the Great Ouse Embankment.

The collections reflect the human and natural history of Bedford and the surrounding area.

Creative communities

Our Audience Development Project offers new cultural opportunities for Bedford’s communities, engaging people in events and creative activities and attracting new visitors for the future. Come along and see the results of this project in changing displays including:

Up for Archaeology  4 July – 2 August
An exhibition created by children attending Saturday Archaeology workshops including artefacts from the collections, a recreation of a Roman dining room, models and activities, all showing what excites them about archaeology. 

Carers in Bedfordshire  11 August – 13 September
This exhibition shows works created by carers inspired by their visits to the exhibition and collections.

pARTicipate  22 September – 18 October
An exhibition celebrating artistic talent diversity, culture and good work young people do in the community contributing to Bedford’s heritage.

Winds of Change  24 October – 3 Jan 2010
An exhibition exploring the varied and surprising links between Bedfordshire and Japan. Part of Japan-UK 150, celebrating 150 years of official trading links between Japan and the UK.

Fabulous carnival costumes from Utopia Mass.

Children's activities are organised during half term and holidays.

A SAW Sampler – a Taste of Roman Craft :  Saturday 11 July       11am – 4pm     Free Event

Experience aspects of archaeology and find out about Saturday Archaeology Workshops from the children themselves.  Try your hand at mosaic-making, painting on plaster, artefact drawing and pot-washing or dress up as a Roman soldier

 
abram gamesAbram Games at Bedford Gallery :
Maximum Meaning, Minimum Means : 6 June – 6 September

Abram Games created many of the most iconic images of mid 20th century Britain, from Official War Posters to the logo for the 1951 Festival of Britain and advertising designs for clients such as London Transport.

 
Edward Bawden at Bedford Gallery : from 3 October

From 1981- 1989 Edward Bawden (1903–89) donated the contents of his studio to the Art Gallery. This major exhibition covers every medium Bawden used, from watercolours and prints to examples of his commercial design.

 

museumCecil Higgins Art Gallery and Bedford Museum redevelopment

Bedford Gallery opened on 1st April 2009 with an exhibition of Highlights from Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Bedford Museum. A grant of £2.5 million has enabled the refurbishment of two historic buildings, Bedford Gallery and the Hexagon, and these works form Phase 1 of the overall vision to refurbish Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Bedford Museum, flagship facilities in Bedford’s Cultural Quarter.

Local people of all ages will be able to enjoy and engage with their heritage thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).  The award of £199,500 to Bedford Museum and Cecil Higgins Art Gallery is for a four year Audience Development Project starting this summer.
