Bedford Museum Beekeeping Day
Sunday 11th May 2003 : 2.00pm – 4.30pm
Although there were initial misgivings about the weather it remained fine all afternoon and the beekeeping event was well attended. Everyone was fascinated by the observation hive, especially the children. The queen bee was in the hive but hard to spot, to make it slightly easier to find her an orange dot had been placed on her back. The honey tasting did a roaring trade all afternoon, I suspect some people visited more than once! Young artists had a chance to colour in bumblebees, and during the afternoon a fair sized swarm was produced. Many people spent a long time talking to the beekeepers and finding out about how honey is made. When they felt confident about their new found knowledge they could test themselves with a quiz around the museum.
The Bedfordshire Beekeepers Association ran the day, the society has considerable expertise having existed for over 70 years. It is hoped to hold the event again next year so keep an eye open for that and other forthcoming museum events.
