60 Tongues of Bedford : October 2001- February 2002
This
is a 5 month project between the young people of Bedford Foyer,
Bedford Museum and the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery. It is funded by the Department
for Education and Skills, via the Campaign for Learning in Museums and Galleries
and the South Eastern Museums Service.
The aim is to get young people more involved in museums and galleries, helping them to be seen as interesting, relevant places where new skills can be learnt and developed. The "60 Tongues" in the project title indicates the approximate number of languages spoken in Bedford and the project is reflecting this in a number of ways.
Some of the things that people have been involved in so far include:
- Collecting the phrase "60 languages in Bedford" (which is slightly easier to translate!) in as many languages as possible, trying to find all sixty by the end of the project!
- Visits to Bedford Museum and Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, including behind the scenes tours
- A night-time ghost tour of the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery
- Photographic projects relating to the collections at both the Museum and Art Gallery, including creating a photographic quiz on a Christmas Tree for the Tree Festival at St. Paul’s Church
- A visit to the Museum of London
An exhibition at Bedford Museum will run from 9th February 2002 for three weeks, although some of the work in progress is currently on display at the Museum.
The project should also have a web-site up and running by the end of February.
