Bedford’s Memory Bank

Bedford’s Memory Bank is designed to be a collection of photographs, documents, text stories, oral reminiscences and video clips that have been digitised by local people as a record of their cultural heritage using basic IT equipment. The Memory Bank will sit permanently in a public gallery and is easily searchable for pictures and details on specific subjects, people, events and places.

The Memory Bank is a resource which will grow to become of great social, cultural and educational value for the people of Bedford.

The software has been specifically developed for people who have little or no previous experience of computers and is extremely easy to use. In the future we hope it will be available to community groups and organisations, clubs and societies and drop-in sessions will be organised for individuals to add their own private memories.

Lacemaker FigureLacemaker Figure

A full-size figure of a lacemaker at her pillow, based on the real-life Mrs Partridge of Sharnbrook, is in the "Lacemakers - Past and Present" exhibition until 15th September. She will then be in the Rural Life Gallery farmworker's cottage room set. She links four centuries of lacemaking in Bedfordshire with the present day. Aragon Lacemakers were awarded a lottery grant to cover the cost of the figure for their silver anniversary.
