Asante gold weight (abramoo)

Asante gold weightHow do you tell someone you love them if they are far away and do not have a ‘phone?

How do you tell your rival that you detest them if they are far away and do not have a ‘phone?

Easy. You send them a greetings card!

Simple if there is a card shop handy.

Some people have found novel ways to send messages.

A simple object can be a greetings card, a specialist instrument, a prompt for story tellers, and a great work of art. This object is one of a small group of pieces sent back to the 1920’s by Scott Daniell, a ‘son’ of Bedford. Gold weights are classic works of art made by the goldsmiths of the Asante kingdom in what is now Ghana.  Each piece is individually crafted and is unique.

The weights come in a bewildering variety of shapes and sizes. Yet each weight was used to measure exact amounts of gold dust - gold being the base of the Asante economy for centuries.

Many weights, like this one, depict well known Asante sayings. What is the proverb depicted here?
