Beard
Attachment, Egypt about 2700 years old
A beard is more than a fuzzy face.
In 17th Century Russia, a beard was a sign of being an unreformed traditionalist. In modern Britain a beard on a young male is often seen as a symbol of rebellion. In ancient Egypt, the Pharaoh wore a false beard as a sign of his being a god.
The bronze beard here may once have adorned a statue or coffin or a rich Egyptian. The intricate plaiting emphasised the person's wish to be close to the Gods.
