Lindesay Bowl
The Bedford Amateur Swimming Club (formed
1894) and the Newnham Swimming Club (formed 1900)
amalgamated in 1904 to establish the Bedford Swimming Club. At the time
there was male membership only, as there were no changing facilities by the
riverside. The Lindesay Bowl was first presented in 1902 for a river swim
from Prebend Street to Town Bridge. The river swims were an annual event
until the level of pollution became dangerous. The trophy continued to
be presented as part of the club championships.
Bedford Swimming Club closed earlier this
year.
